gewone taalbeoefenaar geen partij kiezen.’

Maar waarom ook al die wijzigheid meegedeeld? 't Is heelemaal overbodig. Krijgt

de studeerende dáar een juist begrip door wat Taal is, en wat nederlandsch is, wat

woordvorming; - wat spraakleer wezen moet?

Integendeel.

Beschrijf hem hoe de levende taal is, en hoe die onder z'n oogen wordt

en verandert, dat kan elk opmerken, dat valt onder elks bereik; dat kan elk

meedoen. De nooit te vergeten Nassau zou dat vruchtbare taalstudie genoemd

hebben. Daar moet het toch om te doen wezen?

Al dat andere ligt op den weg van de lui die werk maken van historische taalstudie.

Maar ook voor die is wenschelijk: van 't nú af te beginnen: en dàn terug, tot het

middelnederlandsch

, en verder in 't germaansch zoover men wenscht en wil. Ik

stem met Sweet geheel in; wat hij voor 't engelsch zegt, is ook voor 't nederlandsch

waar:

The old belief in the value of historical and comparative philology as an aid to the

practical study of languages has been rudely shaken of late years; but the practice

of interlarding even the most

elementary

English grammars with

scraps of historical and comparative philology is still almost

universal. In the good old days of Schleicher and Brachet, when the main

principles of Arian and Romance etymology could be tabulated in a brief space, and

with a delusive simplicity and symmetry, this practice was plausible enough; but

nowadays, when even the phonetic changes from Latin to French can hardly be

mastered by specialists themselves, and Grimm's Law has to be supplemented by

Verner's Law and a host of other Laws, all of them liable to endless complications

by analogical influences (which we are no longer allowed to dismiss as irregularities),

common sense and honesty command us to give up the

attempt to make comparative philology and etymology a part

of ordinary education. And now that it is generally admitted that the principles

of language and its development can be better explained by English itself than by

any dead language, it seems most rational to proceed from the

known to the unknown - to learn as much as we can from the history of

English itself before attempting a wider survey, for which the student will then be

thoroughly prepared
